MDGRM Model Explainer
Understanding the Multipolar Digital-Geo Readiness Model methodology
Model Overview
The MDGRM evaluates countries' readiness for multipolar convergence through three key pillars:
Economic Readiness
GDP per capita, growth rate, and trade openness
Digital Transformation
Internet penetration and mobile broadband adoption
Sustainability Performance
Renewable energy share and SDG achievement
Computation Methodology
1. Normalization (Min-Max)
All indicators are normalized to 0-1 scale:
X_norm = (X - X_min) / (X_max - X_min)
2. Pillar Scores (Weighted Average)
Indicators within each pillar are combined using equal or entropy weights
3. Composite Index (Geometric Mean)
Final MDGRM score uses geometric mean to penalize imbalance:
MDGRM = (Economic × Digital × Sustainability)^(1/3)
Weighting Schemes
Equal Weighting
All indicators receive equal importance within their pillar. Simple and transparent approach.
Entropy Weighting
Weights based on information content - indicators with higher variation receive more weight.
Balance Penalty
The geometric mean penalizes imbalanced development. Countries with very high performance in one pillar
but low in others will score lower than countries with balanced moderate performance.
This encourages holistic development across all three dimensions of readiness
Multipolar 101
Understanding the multipolar world and BRICS+ expansion
What is BRICS+?
BRICS+ represents the expanded bloc beyond the original five countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa)
to include new members like UAE, Egypt, Iran, and Ethiopia, with more countries expressing interest.

Why Multipolar Readiness Matters
Shifting Global Order
The world is moving from US-centric to multipolar system with multiple centers of power
Alternative Partnerships
Countries seek diverse partnerships beyond traditional Western alliances
Economic Integration
New trade routes, payment systems, and economic frameworks emerging
Malaysia's Strategic Position
Malaysia occupies a unique position as an ASEAN leader that can bridge Southeast Asia with the BRICS+ bloc:
Strengths
• Strategic location in Southeast Asia
• Strong digital infrastructure
• Diverse economy and trade relationships
• Islamic finance expertise
Opportunities
• ASEAN-BRICS+ integration catalyst
• Green energy transition leadership
• Digital economy partnerships
• Alternative payment systems
Key Terms

TFEC
Total Final Energy Consumption
Min-Max Normalization
Statistical technique to scale values to 0-1 range
Geometric Mean
Average that penalizes extreme values more than arithmetic mean
Entropy Weights
Weights based on information content and variation
